Song & Q&A: God’s Good Work in Us

Lyrics

I am confident about this very thing
that He began a good work in you,
will perfect it and finish it
until the day of Jesus Christ.

Verse 1
There may be storms
and winds against you,
the circumstances may be bad.
But He has promised
to be with you
until all your days
on earth have an end.

Verse 2
Sometimes you have
to wait so long
until He comes and
answers your prayer.
But He will never
forget about you;
He is leading you
on the best way.

Verse 3
And in the end to live is Christ
and to die is gain.
Because I have eternal hope
in Him who
receives me.

Questions & Answers

1. The song says God started a “good work” in me. That’s a big promise! But what exactly is this “good work”? Is it like making me a better person?

Here on earth it doesn’t mean we simply become “better persons.” We are on the way to becoming more like Christ. We are walking the way of sanctification. The good work that will be finished in the end is that we will be a holy priesthood for God in heaven.

2. It says God will finish this work “until the day of Jesus Christ.” That sounds like a long time! How can I not get discouraged when growing up feels so slow?

We should not focus on the whole distance or only on the day of Jesus Christ. Living day by day is the best way.

You never know what happens today or tomorrow — an unexpected accident could change everything.

When I was young, I ran marathons on my bicycle. In a marathon, only the next kilometer is of interest. The one after that you see only when you arrive there.

So we know the day of the Lord will come and He will complete His good work in us — but it is not important when.

3. The second verse talks about storms and bad circumstances. Can you give me a story from the Bible where someone went through a storm but God was really with them?

The disciples were on the Sea of Gennesaret when a storm came. The waves were so high that they feared the boat would sink. They woke Jesus, and with one word He stilled the storm.

4. The song says God promised to be with me “until all your days on earth have end.” But how can I actually feel that He is with me when I feel totally alone sometimes?

This is faith. Faith is not feeling — feelings come from the soul, and the soul can suffer mood changes.
Faith comes from your spirit. The Holy Spirit tells your spirit that you are a child of God.

David, the great singer in the Old Testament, often suffered mood changes, as we see in his psalms. But he commanded his soul to be quiet and to praise the Lord.

5. Waiting for prayers to be answered is so hard, like the song says. Why does God sometimes make us wait for such a long time? Does it mean He doesn’t care?

Paul describes it in Romans 5:

3 We rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance,
4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope,
5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.

So the time of waiting is not wasted. While we think we are just waiting, God is already working in us.

6. It says “He is leading you on the best way.” But what if the way I’m on right now feels really, really bad? How can it be the best?

Paul says in Romans 8 that everything works together for good according to God’s purpose.

When you have a precious diamond, it must be cut and shaped to become useful and more valuable. For the stone, this process is not pleasant. In the same way, when God shapes us, it may not feel good, but it is necessary.

7. The last part says, “to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” That’s a pretty intense line! What does it actually mean for me? How can my everyday life be “Christ”?

Paul wrote this in his letter to the church in Philippi. He knew he would soon die, and he was clear that life only had purpose if it was spent in service to Christ. If he died, it would be gain, because he would go to heaven and meet Jesus Christ in person.

8. It says dying is “gain” because we have eternal hope. That seems scary but also cool. How does hoping for heaven change the way I look at problems at work or with family?

They lose their importance. Does it really matter that I have a conflict with someone if I can gain heaven by simply saying “sorry” or asking for forgiveness and letting go of the problem?

9. The whole song is about God being faithful from start to finish. But what should I do when my own faith feels weak and I start to doubt these promises?

That is exactly why Paul wrote this passage in the Bible, and why I turned it into a song — to remind my brothers and sisters of this spiritual truth.

When our faith is weak, we can listen to this song, read the Bible passage again, or meditate on the Psalms. These encourage us in our spiritual battles against the kingdom of darkness, reminding us that God is with us.

10. If I really believe this song, how should it affect my choices? Like, if God is perfecting His work in me, should I be braver about talking to others about Him?

First of all, you can completely rest in the Lord. When you live with Him, He will guide you with His eyes, and the Holy Spirit will nudge you when you should say something to someone or do something for Him.

🎙️ That’s all for today’s program. Thank you for listening! Have a joyful September, and see you next time!
