Meditation about the Lord s prayer
Our Father in Heaven
When we pray, we should focus on the fact that our ultimate destination is the Father in heaven. We are only on a pilgrimage here.
God is in heaven and desires to be glorified there as well. We should not drag Him down into our earthly filth.
Hallowed be Your name
In order to focus more fully on God in heaven, we should meditate on His holy names.
We should have reverence for God and approach Him as we would approach a king.
His names are His titles.
Your will be done
If we want to do His will, we must ask Him for it.
On earth as it is in heaven
If we do not know or recognize His will, we can look to heaven as our example.
Give us this day our daily bread
We should not leave out our earthly needs—we may ask for them.
God provides for our earthly needs by giving us each day what we need. God is never early or late. He promises to give us each day what we need for that very day.
And forgive us our debts
We should confess our sins and ask for forgiveness.
As we forgive our debtors
The forgiveness of our sins is connected to our willingness to forgive others.
If we are willing to forgive, the Holy Spirit may reveal to us our own share of guilt in a situation—or that the other person is not guilty at all, but we ourselves are.
Sometimes we may have made our neighbor “guilty” by judging them.
And lead us not into temptation
God tempts no one. We must learn to discipline and control our desires so that we do not tempt ourselves or fall into temptation from the devil.
But we may ask God to help us in our inner struggles and in times of temptation.
But deliver us from evil
This is our hope: that the devil and death will be judged, and that we will come to rest in God.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory
The kingdom, the power, and the glory belong to God—not to ourselves.
We must always ask ourselves for whose glory we are doing something.
Do we want people to praise God, or do we want them to praise us for what we have done?
