John 17
Jesus Prays to Be Glorified
1 After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.
2 For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him.
3 Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.
4 I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do.
5 And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.
Jesus Prays for His Disciples
6 “I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word.
7 Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you.
8 For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me.
9 I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours.
10 All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them.
11 I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one.
12 While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled.
13 “I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them.
14 I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world.
15 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.
16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.
17 Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.
18 As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world.
19 For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.
Jesus Prays for All Believers
20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message,
21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.
22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one—
23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.
24 “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.
25 “Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me.
26 I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.”
Hello everyone, I am kiki. Chinese name of our second phase of the program is “读经大讲堂”. The English name is “Bible study”.
We will adopt a relaxed also enjoyable learning mode to take you into a new learning world. Each time I will make a personal summary and analysis from the perspective of a learner, and then Sister Ingrid will help me conduct in-depth learning and problem discussions with everybody.
I hope that such an interesting and interactive process can bring new knowledge experience to you all. The following is my interview with my sister on related issues. Today is the twenty-seventh lecture on the Gospel of John.
Everyone is welcome to leave a message in the comment area for discussion!
2.My summary of John twenty-seventh-time study:
Well, everybody! First, is still my today’s personal study summary.
In John 17, Jesus prays to God before going to the cross. First, He prays for Himself, asking God to glorify Him so that He can glorify God in return.
Jesus says that eternal life is knowing God and Him, the one sent by God. He reflects on how He finished the work God gave Him and asks to be restored to the glory He had before the world began.
Next, Jesus prays for His disciples. He says they belong to God and have accepted His words. He asks God to protect them after He leaves, so they can be united just as He and God are one.
Jesus knows the world will hate them because they follow Him, but He doesn’t ask for them to be taken out of the world.
Instead, He prays for God to protect them from evil and make them holy through God’s truth.
Lastly, Jesus prays for all future believers—those who will come to believe in Him through the disciples’ message. He prays for unity among all Christians, just like the unity He has with God.
Jesus wants everyone to be one so that the world can see God’s love in them. He also asks for believers to be with Him and see His glory, which God gave Him before creation. Jesus finishes by saying that He has shown God to the world so that His love may be in all believers.
But in the parent-child relationship in China, a good father-son relationship is actually relatively equal. We don’t need to pray to our father for help. As long as we are honest with our father about our thoughts, he will help us within his ability. So this is very different from the relationship between Jesus and his father.
Now let Ingrid sister make a go further summary.
3.Sister’s comment from my studying summary:
In the bible we read several times, that Jesus was praying alone, often on a hill. But here in the gospel of John we have the chance to hear the infirmity between Jesus and the father, what was important for them to speak about.
Of course, the most important thing for them war, why Jesus came to earth and what was his mission: His mission was to die for all sinner for to pay the price of sin and to give to all of them who believe eternal live.
Jesus talks with his father about his disciples, because he knew how fragile they are: Peter denied him, when he was asked about Jesus and two of them went away to Emmaus when they should stay with the others in Jerusalem.
And he knew, that his disciples will suffer persecution when he will go to the father this is why he prayed for them.
And he prays for all the believers who came after the disciples, that they may be united and that Jesus love remains in us.
Q list part: base on John 16th items:
Okay. Base on above bible study content, now let me ask sister some related questions.
We hope the following questions can be helpful to our brothers and sisters who have just become Christians.
1.What does Jesus mean by asking to be glorified?
Glory is the Greek word doxa. Another word for doxa is honor. On earth Jesus was humble but after his resurrection he got the name which is above other names and the honor that he had in heaven before.
2.What is eternal life according to today’s content?
Eternal life is to come to know God father and whom who he has sent, the Lord Jesus Christ.
3.How did Jesus protect His disciples while He was with them?
He guarded them through the name of God Father in heaven.
4. Why does Jesus ask God to protect His disciples instead of taking them out of the world?
They still had a ministry to preach the Gospel for the coming generation and to build Gods kingdom on earth by receiving the Holy Spirit in them.
5.What does Jesus mean by “sanctify them by the truth”?
To be saint means, to put aside. The truth of Jesus Christ, his words, his death and resurrection will put the disciples apart from the world, so that they live physically in the world, but spiritually as citizens of heaven.
6.How does Jesus describe His unity with God the Father?
The father is in him and he is in the father.
7.Why is unity among Christians important according to Jesus’ prayer?
Jesus wants that we love each other, because this shall be the sign that we are his disciples.
But already in the first church, unity was fragile, when the Greek and the Hebrews discussed at the table.
We are all very different, therefore Jesus is praying for unity, because this is the most difficult challenge in the church of Christ.
8.What does Jesus want future believers to experience when they are with Him?
They shall be united; they shall see his glory and they shall have the love of Jesus in their live.
He wants that the love of Jesus is in them and Jesus in them.
9.How does Jesus say the world will know that God has loved the disciples?
Jesus says, that the world will hate the disciples of Christ. And we get a proof of this each day, when Christians are discriminated or even killed in some countries of the world.
10.What does Jesus’ hope to accomplish by continuing to reveal God to His followers?
He wants to save more people, not only the 11 disciples. Gods will be, that all people are saved and come to know the truth about him and the sacrifice of Christ on the cross.
