Luke 8,40-56
Jesus Heals a Woman and Jairus’s Daughter
40 Now when Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed him, for they were all waiting for him.
41 And there came a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue. And falling at Jesus’ feet, he implored him to come to his house,
42 for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. As Jesus went, the people pressed around him.
43 And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, and though she had spent all her living on physicians, she could not be healed by anyone.
44 She came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment, and immediately her discharge of blood ceased.
45 And Jesus said, “Who was it that touched me?” When all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the crowds surround you and are pressing in on you!”
46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me, for I perceive that power has gone out from me.”
47 And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed.
48 And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.”
49 While he was still speaking, someone from the ruler’s house came and said, “Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher anymore.”
50 But Jesus, on hearing this, answered him, “Do not fear; only believe, and she will be well.”
51 And when he came to the house, he allowed no one to enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the child.
52 And all were weeping and mourning for her, but he said, “Do not weep, for she is not dead but sleeping.”
53 And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead.
54 But taking her by the hand, he called, saying, “Child, arise.”
55 And her spirit returned, and she got up at once. And he directed that something should be given her to eat.
56 And her parents were amazed, but he charged them to tell no one what had happened.
Introduction
Hello everyone, I am Kiki. The Chinese name of our second phase of the program is „读经大讲堂“. The English name is „Bible Study“.
We will adopt a relaxed and enjoyable learning mode to take you into a new world of learning. Each time I will make a personal summary and analysis from the perspective of a learner, and then Sister Ingrid will help me conduct in-depth learning and problem discussions with everybody.
I hope that such an interesting and interactive process can bring new knowledge and experience to you all. The following is my interview with Sister Ingrid on related issues. Today is the twenty-first lecture on the Gospel of Luke.
Everyone is welcome to leave a message in the comment area for discussion!
2. My Summary of Luke Twenty-First Study
Well, everybody! Firstly, here is my personal study summary for today.
When Jesus returned, a huge crowd greeted him. Jairus, a synagogue leader, fell at Jesus’ feet and begged him to heal his only daughter, who was about twelve and dying. As Jesus went with Jairus, people pressed so close that a desperate woman—who had suffered from bleeding for twelve years—reached out and touched the fringe of his garment. Immediately she was healed. Jesus stopped, knowing power had gone out from him. The woman confessed, and Jesus told her, “Your faith has healed you; go in peace.”
Before they could reach Jairus’s house, messengers arrived saying his daughter had died. Jesus told Jairus, “Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will live.”
At the house, only Peter, James, John, and the child’s parents were allowed in. Everyone was weeping, but Jesus said, “She’s not dead but sleeping.” They laughed, knowing she was dead.
Jesus took her hand and said, “Child, arise.” Her spirit returned, she stood up at once, and Jesus told them to give her something to eat. Her parents were amazed, and Jesus asked them to keep this miracle private.
Now let Sister Ingrid give a further summary.
3. Sister’s Comment on My Summary
Here in the text, we meet two women: one is young and one is old. One is poor, because she gave all she had to the doctors and, because of her sickness, she had to live outside society. The other is rich, because her father was a leader in the synagogue and had high influence in society.
In both lives the number 12 is important: the older woman had been sick for 12 years and the young girl was 12 years old. The young girl was so ill that she was at the point of death, and it was urgent that Jesus come to heal her.
But Jesus did not hurry. He did not ask the people to leave in order to walk faster; he walked as it was possible for him without sending the crowd away.
And there in the crowd was the woman who thought—as is reported in another gospel—“If I only touch his garment, then I will be healed.” And so it was: she touched his garment and was healed.
But Jesus noticed that power had gone out from him, and he wanted to know who it was. He wanted to make clear that the power was not in his garment, but in him, the Messiah who came from heaven to earth.
So the lady testified that she had touched his garment, and Jesus declared that it was not the garment which healed but her faith in him.
Meanwhile, the 12-year-old girl died, and everything seemed to be lost. The people were crying about her death, but when Jesus arrived, he said, “She is only sleeping.” The people mocked him, because they knew that she was dead.
They did not invite Jesus, but he entered the house with his closest disciples and the parents of the girl and said to her, “Stand up,” and she returned to life.
The parents were astonished, and to make it easier to believe that she lived, he told them to give her some food.
Since the crowd only wanted to see Jesus’ miracles, and they wanted to see more, Jesus wanted to hold this event in private, because most of the people saw him as a kind of miracle worker, but not as the Messiah.
4. Q&A Based on Luke 21
Okay. Based on the above Bible study content, now let me ask Sister some related questions.
We hope the following questions can be helpful to our brothers and sisters who have just become Christians.
- Why did Jairus come to Jesus, and what did he ask him to do?
Jairus had a daughter who was so sick that she was at the point of death. Jairus wanted Jesus to heal his daughter. - How did the woman with the bleeding problem demonstrate her faith?
She thought, “If I only touch his garment, I will be healed.” We don’t know if she really believed in Jesus or only in his garment, since in the Old Testament there are stories where people touched a prophet’s garment and miracles happened. - What clue told Jesus that someone had been healed?
He felt that power had gone out from him. - How did Jesus respond when the woman admitted touching him?
He said, “Go, your faith has healed you.” - What message did the messengers bring about Jairus’s daughter?
They said, “Do not disturb the Teacher anymore; she is dead.” - How did Jesus encourage Jairus after hearing that his daughter had died?
He said, “Only believe, and she will live.” - Why did Jesus allow only Peter, James, John, and the parents into the girl’s room?
He wanted the miracle to remain as private as possible. - Why did the people laugh when Jesus said the girl was ‘sleeping’?
Because they saw that the girl was dead. - What exactly did Jesus say to bring the girl back to life?
He took her by the hand and told her to rise. - What two acts of compassion and power are shown in this story?
First, he healed a woman who was socially excluded. With a flow of blood, she had to stay outside the town and was not allowed to share life with other people, according to the law of Moses.
Second, the girl was physically dead, and Jesus gave her back her life, so that she might live and her parents would not feel the sorrow of losing their child.
