Song: He is the living water
Lyrics
Song Text
She walked in the sun,
in the heat of the day,
far away from the people.
She was alone and so afraid
of the fingers pointing at her.
She was surprised to meet a person
sitting there on the well.
He said to her:
“If you give me your troubles,
I will give you living water in return.”
He is the living water.
He stills the thirst of your soul.
When you receive Him as Redeemer,
you will never thirst again.
Come, drink from the living water.
Let your life be changed.
And when you have drunk from the water,
you can give to others too.
She had five husbands,
and the man she was living with
did not marry her.
She was, for the people, a sinful person;
they avoided contact with her.
She was so surprised to meet Jesus,
who knew everything about her.
He said:
“I will give your soul the water
that you have searched for in men.”
Comprehension Questions
1. Why was the woman feeling alone and afraid at the beginning of the story?
The woman had a lifestyle that other people considered immoral or impure.
She lived in a small village, and it was obvious that other people were talking about her,
so she preferred to be alone.
It is not written in the Bible, but in the afternoon, when Jesus was sitting at Jacob’s well,
it was only the woman there — no other people were in the scene.
2. What did Jesus offer to give the woman in exchange for her troubles?
He offered her living water — that means, a life full of joy and hope,
a hope that satisfies the needs of our soul.
3. What is the “living water” a symbol for in this song?
It is the love, joy, and peace that Jesus gives us
when we repent from our former sins,
go to the cross,
and receive Him as our Savior.
4. According to the text, what happens to your soul when you receive the “living water”?
First, you still the thirst of your soul.
You become calm and quiet and stop feeling forced
to participate in the great banquet that the devil offers,
because you feel satisfied and need nothing more.
The devil offers us salted water —
we become thirstier when we take it.
But Jesus offers us water clear as crystal,
and our inner thirst disappears.
5. After you have drunk the living water, what are you able to do for others?
When I have stilled the thirst of my soul,
I can give testimony about what happened to me
and encourage other people to come and taste, too.
6. What was the woman’s personal life like, and why did people avoid her?
She had been married five times
and was now living with her partner without marrying him.
For the people, she was an unclean person.
7. Why was the woman so surprised that Jesus knew all about her?
Certainly, she had kept her past secret
and started a conversation with Jesus
about the difference between the religion of the Jews and the Samaritans.
But she could not fool Jesus.
He said directly: “Bring your husband.”
When she answered, “I have no husband,”
He replied, “You have spoken the truth,
for you have had five husbands,
and the man you are now living with is not your husband.”
8. The song lyrics say she had “searched in men” for something. What do you think she was really searching for?
We all look for somebody who truly loves us,
who takes care of us and gives us a home and a shelter.
For some reason, this woman always had bad luck
with her husbands and relationships —
she got divorced five times.
The main reason we do not find what we want
is that we are looking in the wrong place.
We don’t find deep love in relationships;
the pure and divine love can only be found in God.
9. How do you think the woman felt after her conversation with Jesus — still ashamed, or hopeful? Why?
She felt hopeful,
because she ran to the village
and told everybody what had happened there at the well.
She left her clay jar,
which she used every day to fetch water in the heat of the sun,
and ran to the others in the town
to tell the good news about the living water.
10. If you could ask Jesus for “living water” to help with a big problem in your life, what would it be for?
I have already received the living water
and have been reborn in spirit and in water,
so that I am a beloved child of God.
My desire is to understand more deeply
how much God loves me
and to realize that it is absolutely unnecessary
to search for love and approval from people on earth.
In Jesus, we have everything,
because God the Father loved this world so much
that He gave His Son,
so that no one shall perish,
but have eternal life.
And Jesus said:
“Greater love has no one than this —
to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”
So if we are looking for someone who loves us
and makes us feel worthy and whole,
let us go to Jesus —
He offers everything that we need.t us go to Jesus —
He offers everything we need.
