Lukas 19,28-48

The Triumphal Entry

28 And when he had said these things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.

29 When he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount that is called Olivet, he sent two of the disciples,

30 saying, “Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat. Untie it and bring it here.

31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this: ‘The Lord has need of it.’”

32 So those who were sent went away and found it just as he had told them.

33 And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?”

34 And they said, “The Lord has need of it.”

35 And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it.

36 And as he rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road.

37 As he was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen,

38 saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”

39 And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.”

40 He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”

Jesus Weeps over Jerusalem

41 And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it,

42 saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.

43 For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side

44 and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

45 And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold,

46 saying to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a den of robbers.”

47 And he was teaching daily in the temple. The chief priests and the scribes and the principal men of the people were seeking to destroy him,

48 but they did not find anything they could do, for all the people were hanging on his words.

1. Introduction

Hello everyone, I am Kiki. The Chinese name of the second phase of our program is “读经大讲堂”. The English name is “Bible Study”.

We will adopt a relaxed and enjoyable learning mode to take you into a new learning world. Each time I will give a personal summary and analysis from the perspective of a learner, and then Sister Ingrid will help me conduct in-depth learning and discussion of questions with everybody.

I hope that such an interesting and interactive process can bring a new knowledge experience to you all. The following is my interview with the sister on related issues. Today is the 56th lecture on the Gospel of Luke.

Everyone is welcome to leave a message in the comment area for discussion!

2. My Summary of the 56th Luke Study

Well, everybody! First, here is my personal study summary for today.

When Jesus came near Jerusalem, he sent two disciples to get a colt. They found it just as he said, and they brought it to him.

As Jesus rode toward the city, people spread their coats on the road. A large crowd praised God and shouted, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!”

Some Pharisees told Jesus to silence them, but he said that if they were quiet, the stones would cry out.

When Jesus saw Jerusalem, he wept. He knew the city would be destroyed because it did not recognize God’s visit.

Then Jesus entered the temple and drove out the sellers. He said God’s house should be a house of prayer, not a den of robbers.

He taught in the temple every day.

The leaders wanted to kill him, but they could not, because the people were amazed by his words. This story shows Jesus as the humble King, the grieving Savior, and the one who cares about true worship.

Now let Sister Ingrid give a further summary.

3. Sister’s Comment on My Study Summary

When Jesus came to Jerusalem with his disciples, the disciples were happy, because they thought that Jesus would now establish his kingdom in Jerusalem. This is why they shouted; they announced the new king.

To enter Jerusalem, Jesus used a colt. From the other Gospels, we know that it was a donkey colt and that nobody had used it before. Jesus used a donkey because a donkey is destined to carry loads, as Jesus bore the load of our sins. By riding on a donkey colt, some Scriptures of the Old Testament were fulfilled, and the Pharisees of course knew that the Messiah would come riding on a donkey colt.

Later, when Jesus comes back at the end of time, he will come on a horse, which is an animal of war and victory.

Jesus knew that they would crucify him in Jerusalem and that Jerusalem would be punished by being destroyed by the Romans in the year 70. This is why Jesus wept over the city. He knew that by dying on the cross, the whole world would be delivered from sin, but he had mercy on those who did it, because they would be punished.

And it is correct that Jesus went to the temple and cast out all who were doing business in the temple.

Here we have to stop for a moment and ask ourselves: Do we really honor Jesus with our lives and pray humbly and simply to him, or are we sometimes doing business with God, too, when we pray out of a selfish, unclean heart? So we have to allow Jesus to enter our hearts and to throw out all that does not please him.

While Jesus taught in the temple, he was protected by the crowd around him, who wanted to hear his teaching.

But as we know, in the end he was delivered by one of his own to be crucified and to die for us.

4. Q List Part: Based on the Items of the 56th Luke Study

Okay. Based on the above Bible study content, now let me ask the sister some related questions. We hope the following questions can be helpful to our brothers and sisters.

1. Where was Jesus going in this story?

He was going to Jerusalem, because his destiny was to be crucified there.

2. What were they supposed to say if someone asked why they were taking the colt?

They should say, “The master needs the colt.”

3. How did the disciples and the crowd honor Jesus as he rode into Jerusalem?

They put their clothes on the colt, set Jesus on the colt, and shouted, “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord,” the greeting that is reserved for the Messiah.

4. What did the crowd shout as Jesus came down the Mount of Olives?

They celebrated him as the new king.

5. Why did some Pharisees want Jesus to stop his disciples from praising him?

Because they did not want him to be the new king.

6. What did Jesus mean when he said the stones would cry out if his disciples were silent?

The celebration will take place; if there were no people to shout, creation would shout.

7. Why did Jesus cry when he saw Jerusalem?

Because he knew the destiny of Jerusalem: that it would be punished and destroyed for what they would do to him.

8. What did Jesus say would happen to Jerusalem because it did not know the time of God’s visit?

In the person of Jesus, God visited Jerusalem, and the Jews did not.

9. What did Jesus do in the temple, and why was he angry?

He drove out all the people who were making a business out of the temple. He was angry because the temple was for prayer and not for doing business.

10. How did the people and the religious leaders react to Jesus’ teaching in the temple?

The religious leaders wanted to catch him in order to kill him, but the ordinary people heard his teaching and wanted to be with him.
